Proxy for SP500
Since my subscription to esignal limits me to 500 symbols I was wondering if anyone in this situation used a proxy - for instance taking out the 10-15 least weighted symbols from the neoticker file that loads the symbols....I recently contacted S&P about this and they won't provide the weights unless you subscribe to their service. Is anyone doing this? I suppose even this way would be better than using $TICK based on the NYSE.

Try using the OEX version - because OEX contains exactly the top 100 symbols in SP500.

1. You can subscribe to more symbols but you probably know that - i am just trying to be complete... i have a subscription to 1200 symbols... 2. You can work out the cap weights for any sp stocks with the DDE info that esignal provides... a. Create a column of symbols for the 500 symbols for last price (winros|last!XYZ) b. Copy that column into the a new column to the right - replace the word last in the DDE formula with the word shares (winros|shares!XYZ) using the replace function in the edit menu - which is an easy way to do it fast - in one shot 15 seconds... c. Create a formula column (call it Cap Value) whose result is a multiple of the last price of each sp500 stock by its outstanding shares (last * shares) = cap values d. Also sum total that colunmn (Cap Value) at its bottom (cell 501) = equals the total cap value of the whole sp500 at that moment e. Now you have the cap value of each 500 stock and the total cap value of all 500 stocks... divide the cap value of each stock into the total sp500 cap value to derive weights... f. You can do this for any index that is cap weighted... cj |
